Genesis 202
Lesson Twelve
Sin Enters

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

As we come to the last lesson in Genesis 202 studies, the whole picture of innocents and purity changes. We went from the blessed union of the first husband and wife, to Satan showing up to destroy what God has done. It is fitting that these two events are so closely related. The earthy family is suppose to be a physical representation of our union with God Himself. Satan knows that if he can destroy that picture, he can destroy this earthly representation of God's family. The Father is an earthly representation of Christ, the Mother being the representation of the Church, and the children represent the masses that need reached. Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it (Eph. 5:25). And the Husband is to love his wife and be willing to do the same. The wife is to train up the children and teach them, and the Church is suppose to be the light of the world and teach all nations. Satan does not want this to happen and so he makes an appearance right after the first marriage takes place.

Notice also the first thing he says to Eve.. "hath God said...?" His first line of attack is to cast doubt on God's Word. He didn't lie to Eve, he didn't try to force some far fetched doctrine on her, he just simply tossed a question out there. And then he changes God's word just slightly... "ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" Satan hasn't changed over the years. He is still attacking God's Word and trying to get people to question it, and change it, even if it's just a tiny little bit. This is why I will not budge from the KJ version Bible. It is the most accurate, and most literal translation, of the bible we have for the English speaking people. Sadly, if you are from another part of the world and speak a different language, I do not know what translation is best for you. I would encourage you to research and find which translation is closest to the original that you can find. I know there are many in the world that only have one bible in their language. I can only trust that God has made certain you have an accurate translation. It's up to you then to make certain you don't let corruption sneak in and destroy it. Remember, Satan is "subtil". He knows how to get in and destroy things.

Now, in verse two, Eve decides to chat with Satan and tells him that they can indeed eat of the trees of the garden, but the tree in the midst of the garden they could not eat of it, nor could the "touch it" least they die. Now, I have studied this portion of Scripture many times, and I have never found any place were God told them not to "touch" this tree or it's fruit. I have read and heard many sermons regarding this, and how Satan got Eve to add to God's Word. Now this may be the case, but, it does sound like something God would say. If they were not suppose to eat of the fruit of this tree, why would God want them to touch it either? God tells us in Romans 13:14 to "make not provisions for the flesh...".

In other words, God wants us to stay away from things we should not be around. We shouldn't be in bars and other places where we can be tempted to do wrong. We should not be going to websites that could entice us to do wrong...and so on. So for God to tell Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of Knowledge of good and evil, and to not even touch it, does not sound strange at all to me. I think Eve was full aware of what God had commanded them, and I think she told Satan exactly what she was told. Just because earlier parts of Scripture did not mention the "touching" part, does not mean God didn't say it.

Now, Satan gets to the point. He knows Eve knows what God said, so he tries a different tactic. Now he cast doubt on God's motives. He says, "ye shall not surely die:" and then he tells Eve in essences, "your not going to die, God just don't want you to eat it because when you do, you will be like god, knowing good and evil". (that's my paraphrase of what he said). This got Eve to question God, and this is were the problem starts. Oh how Satan loves to do this, and Oh how many have fallen by this same tactic. Every single day I deal with someone who has been deceived by Satan into thinking God didn't mean what he said, or that God's Word is wrong, or that they know better then God does. Once they do this, they do the exact thing Eve did next, they start looking at that which they should not be looking at. In Eve's case, she started looking at the fruit she was not suppose to eat. In our case today, we start looking for answers in the World, in the flesh, or even in religion. We start looking for answers every place EXCEPT where we should...in God's Word.

Once Eve started talking to Satan, it wasn't long before she started questioning God, and from there, it was just a short trip to looking at that which she shouldn't be looking at.... "and when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat."... and an even shorter trip to doing that which she was not suppose to. Now we always like to blame the Woman for causing sin to enter into the World, but did you notice that the Man was there with her? He was suppose to be the head of the family. Why didn't he say something? Why didn't he stop it? Adam knew better. He could have stopped this whole thing, but he didn't. No doubt he was looking at this fruit to. No doubt Satan was getting him to question God as well. But, it was Eve who took that first step. In Timothy 2:13,14 we learn why women are not to exercise spiritual authority over the man, because "Adam was not deceived; but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."

This is a sad story. The woman was deceived, the man was not. Yet, the man just sit back and let it all happen. Not much has changed over the years. Where are the men today? Men, this world needs you to be men and take a stand. Take a stand for God's Word. Take a stand for what is right. You know better. This brings up another point. God made men and women different. That's right, there is a difference between the sexes. God made men to be strong..to be logical and to take control. He made women to be loving, sensitive, nurturing, compassionate. Because of this, Women can be deceived much easier. Women can fall for a sad story much easier. Men... well we shoot first and ask questions later. That is why it is not good for man to be alone. We need the balance. Women need the balance. When everyone does what God intended for them to do, it works great. Both Men and Women are needed. There is no one sex that is more important. But each needs to stay within the framework that God intended. There is much more about this that could be said, but we will save it for another lesson.

"And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons." The "knowledge" of sin entered. They had been naked all this time, but were not ashamed. But now, with the knowledge of sin, they became ashamed and made them aprons to cover up their nakedness. What God said would happen, happened. And now, where is Satan? Oh, he took a step back and just let them go. His work was done. Spiritually they died.  Very soon, without access to the Tree of life, they will be on their way to physical death. The knowledge of sin has entered, and with that their desire to walk with God has died, and now, sin is imputed unto them. What a sad, sad, sad, ending to God's creation.

BUT, There is good news. There is a plan !!! God has it all worked out. The story is not over. PRAISE THE LORD !!!!

Answer the questions below.  If you miss a question, go back and study that portion of the class and then retake the test.  Once you have received a 100% you may proceed to the next class.  You DO NOT have to submit this test for grading.  Only the final test will be submitted.
